Prospects Celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday With Win

By Len Nunes

A 3-run first inning gave our Prospects a quick lead to the start the game. A 3-run eighth inning put our Prospects back in the lead for good making sure the sold-out RE/MAX Field faithful were in a great mood for the post-game performance by The Whiskey Boys and the Canada Day fireworks. 6-5 was the final score Saturday night extending the Prospects win streak to 4 games.

Dean Olson would start the Prospects offence with a leadoff single extending his personal hit streak to 9 games. Jake Lanferman collected his team leading 22nd RBI knocking home Olson to open the scoring. Matt Quartel and Ryan Koop also collected RBI singles giving our Prospects a 3-0 lead after the opening frame.

Prospects starting pitcher Erik Sabrowski cruised through four of his five innings. The only blemish on his evening was a 3-run Moose Jaw 4th inning.

Jye Deeble entered the game in the 6th inning and saw the Miller Express score a run to take the lead 4-3. Deeble cruised through the 7th and 8th inning on the mound.

With the score still 4-3 for the road team; the Prospects offence took back the lead and then some! With 2-out and 2-on, Anthony Cusati would triple making the score 5-4 in favour of your Prospects. Tony Olson would knock Cusati home for an extra insurance run making it 6-4.

Closer Andrew Mirasty would come out to pitch the top of the 9th for the fourth consecutive game. It was Mirasty’s tenth appearance overall of the season and first one in which he allowed a run. After the run scored to make it 6-5, he locked down the final two outs to earn his 6th save of the season.

Player Of The Game: Matt Quartel went 2-for-3 at the plate with a RBI and a walk.

Play Of The Game: Anthony Cusati’s 2-RBI triple in the bottom of the 8th inning to not only tie the game but also give the Prospects the lead.

Prospects Win Third Straight

By Len Nunes

If you love a game with plenty of offence, then Friday night’s 10-8 win over the Weyburn Beavers was your slice of baseball heaven. Every Prospects batter collected at least one hit with eight (8!) of them getting at least a second hit. Zane Takhar, who ended a triple short of a cycle, and Ryan Koop collected 3 hits apiece!

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first, the first two batters of the game quickly extended their personal hitting streaks to 8 games. Dean Olson led off with a single and Zane Takhar hit his first homer of the season staking our Prospects to 2-1 lead. Tony Olson would collect a RBI with a single and Ryan Koop would collect a RBI with a double to give our Prospects a 4-1 lead after one inning.

Prospects starting pitcher Scott Gillespie settled down nicely after allowing a run in the opening frame until the 4th inning when the Beavers were able to tie the game. The Prospects offense was there in the bottom of the 4th to pick up their pitcher. Takhar collected his 3rd RBI of the game with a 2-out double breaking the tie. Jake Lanferman hit his team leading 3rd triple of the season to bring home Takhar to give the Prospects a 6-4 lead.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, Koop would earn his second and third RBI of the game with a double extending the lead to 8-4. Dean Olson would bring him home with a RBI single further extending the lead to 9-4.

Speaking of further extending the lead, in the bottom of the 6th inning Nick Spillman knocked home Erik Sabrowski to make it 10-4 Prospects.

Scott Kramers came in to pitch for the Prospects in the top of the 5th with 2-on and 0-out. Kramers retired the Beavers in order to escape the jam. Kramers would have another 3-up-3-down inning in the top of the 6th before running into trouble in the top of the 7th. When the dust settled after the 7th inning, Brett Higgins was now your pitcher and the lead had shrunk to 10-8.

Michael Gahan would pitch a scoreless 8th inning and Andrew Mirasty would continue his streak of scoreless 9th innings to send the RE/MAX Field faithful home happy.

Player Of The Game: A triple short of the cycle, Zane Takhar earns this nomination

Play Of The Game: Zane Takhar’s first inning homer set the tone for a wild and fun evening of baseball.

Next Game: The Traditional Canada Day Fireworks Game! Gates open at 5PM, first pitch at 7:05PM. Captain Canada Ryan Smyth will be signing autographs, RCMP Honour Guard, Whisky Boys performance and so much more. The Prospects game is so much more than just waiting for the fireworks!
